John (Johannes II) Eckstein (* around 1760 in Strelitz ; † 1838 in Barbados ) was a German painter who lived and worked mainly in England and later in the United States of America.

Life

Johannes or mostly Anglo-Saxon John Eckstein was the son of the sculptor and painter Johannes Eckstein , who was probably born in Mecklenburg-Strelitz . From 1787 to 1802 he was represented at the exhibitions of the Royal Academy in London. In art historical literature, father and son are often confused or even mistaken for one person. John Eckstein worked in London and Birmingham, as a marine painter but also in the Caribbean. He dedicated his portfolio from Mount Diamond in 1804 to the British Admiral Samuel Hood . Portraits of him are owned by the National Portrait Gallery in London.
