John Elbridge Hines

John Elbridge Hines ( October 3, 1910 - July 19, 1997 ) was an American theologian and Anglican clergyman. From 1955 to 1964 he was Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas and then from 1965 to 1974 Presiding Bishop and thus Primate of the Episcopal Church of the United States of America .

Life

Hines grew up in Seneca , South Carolina . He was married to Helen Hines († 1996). The couple had four sons and one daughter.

education and profession

Hines graduated from the University of the South and graduated from the theological seminary in Alexandria , Virginia . In 1945 he was ordained bishop by Henry St. George Tucker and Clinton Simon Quin and Karl Morgan Block . He worked as a coadjutor in the Diocese of Texas until 1955 .
