John Eric Maclean Carvell

John Eric Maclean Carvell (born August 12, 1894 - 1978 ) was a British diplomat . Among other things, he served as British envoy and ambassador in Quito (1947–1951).

Life and activity

After attending the Berkhamsted School and studying at London University , he took part in the First World War with the Queen's Westminster Rifles from 1915: he joined the British expeditionary force sent to the continent and was wounded twice. From 1917 to 1918 he worked as an instructor in the Portuguese Army and then from 1918 to 1919 as a staff captain at the headquarters of the British Army in the London borough .

On June 10, 1919, Carvell was appointed vice consul on parole in Lisbon . From October 12 to November 8, 1920 and from January 5 to May 23, 1921, he acted as the acting consul general there as representative for the absent consul general. On April 14, 1921 he was transferred to Cadiz and on September 23, 1922 to Port-au-Prince .

From November 4, 1925, Carvell headed the British consulate in Brest . His regular appointment there took place on December 18, 1925. He then worked from January 22, 1928 to October 18, 1932 in the Foreign Office in London. On May 31, 1934, he was transferred to New York. In 1934 he was temporarily employed there as managing consul general. From September 11 to 21, 1935, he worked in the Department of Overseas Trade. In 1937 he was reinstated as the managing consul general in New York.

On April 12, 1938, Carvell was appointed consul general in Munich . On the occasion of the looming outbreak of World War II, he was recalled to the Foreign Office in London on August 17, 1939, where he remained active until 1942.

On December 5, 1942, Carvell was appointed acting consul general in Algiers . He was promoted to the regular consul general there on May 9, 1944. After the end of World War II, he was transferred to Los Angeles on October 27, 1945 .

On December 9, 1947, Carvell was appointed Special Envoy and Minister Plenipotentiary of the British Government (Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary) in Ecuador , based in Quito. As of January 12, 1951, his position was converted to that of special envoy and plenipotentiary.

Carvell was married to Cicely Lilian Garrat, with whom he had a daughter.
