John FitzRichard
John FitzRichard , Lord of Halton († Unsure: October 11, 1190 near Acre ) was an Anglo-Norman soldier and nobleman who served as constable of the Earls of Chester.
origin
John was a son of Richard FitzEustace († 1163), a younger son of Eustace FitzJohn , Constable of Chester, and of Albreda (also Aubrey) de Lisours († 1194). His mother was a daughter and eventually heir to Robert de Lacy († 1193). His younger brother, Roger FitzRichard , became Lord of Warkworth , and another brother, Robert FitzRichard , became Prior of the Order of St. John in England.
Life
After his father's death in 1163, John inherited Halton and the office of Constable of Chester, making him the most important official of Earl Hugh of Chester . After Hugh's death in 1181, he served in the same capacity as his heir Ranulf of Chester . In 1166 he paid a fee of 1,000 marks to keep his mother's possessions. After 1172 he founded the Stanlaw Cistercian Abbey in Cheshire and a hospital in Castle Donington . Earl Hugh thanked him with lands in Antrobus, Cheshire. Around 1178 he confirmed John's donation from Stanney to Stanlaw Abbey , a little later he exempted the monks from the customs duties due in Chester. During the rebellion against King Henry II in 1173, John was a loyal supporter of the king. In early May 1181, when Hugh de Lacy lost the king's favor and was recalled from his office as Justiciar of Ireland , John was sent to Ireland with Bishop Richard Peche of Coventry to take control of Dublin. Nevertheless, before Hugh left Ireland, they assisted in building numerous castles in Leinster . The following winter, John and Bishop Richard were recalled to England, while Hugh de Lacy returned to Ireland. On September 3, 1189, John attended Richard the Lionheart's coronation . In March 1190 he left England to take part in the Third Crusade led by Richard the Lionheart . He died in the Holy Land during the siege of Acre .
Family and offspring
He married Alice, a daughter of Robert of Essex and his wife Alice. He had several children with her, including:
- Roger FitzJohn
- Richard of Chester, buried in Norton Priory
- Geoffrey
Another son, Eustace of Chester , may have been out of wedlock. His heir became his eldest son, Roger.
