John Frederick Lewis

John Frederick Lewis (born July 14, 1805 in London , † August 15, 1876 in Walton-on-Thames , Surrey , England) was a British painter. His works can be assigned to orientalism .

Life

John Frederick Lewis spent most of his life abroad. He knew Italy and Spain, from 1840 to 1841 he stayed in the Balkans. He then spent ten years in Cairo , where he made numerous sketches. After his return to England in 1851, he created watercolors and oil paintings. In 1847 he married Marian Harper, whom he portrayed in several of his pictures in oriental garments and interiors. Eventually he was elected a member of the Society of Painters in Water Colors . He lived in Walton-on-Thames until his death .
