John Gilbert, Baron Gilbert

John William Gilbert, Baron Gilbert ( PC , FRGS ; April 5, 1927 - June 2, 2013 ) was a British politician ( Labor Party ) and a member of the House of Lords .

Life

Gilbert received his education at Merchant Taylors' School before studying economics at St. John's College and New York University . He also worked as a chartered accountant in Canada . In the general election in 1966 , he ran for the Labor Party in the Ludlow constituency , but could not win a seat in the House of Commons. From 1970 to 1974 he was for the Labor Party member of the House of Commons for the Dudley constituency , then until 1997 for the Dudley East constituency. 1974/75 he was State Secretary for Finance and then Minister of Transport until 1976 under Harold Wilson . He served as Secretary of State for Defense in James Callaghan's cabinet . During his time in the House of Commons, he was a member of various committees, including the Defense Committee between 1979 and 1987 and the Intelligence Committee from 1994 to 1997 .

In 1978 he became a member of the Privy Council in 1983 awarded him the Wake Forest University the LLD honorary. Since 1997 Gilbert was a life peer with the title Baron Gilbert of Dudley in the County of West Midlands in the House of Lords, and in the same year he became Minister of State for Procurement Logistics in the Department of Defense (until 1999). He was a member of Amnesty International , the Fabian Society and the WWF .
