John Gordon, 1st Viscount of Kenmure (* around 1599 ; † September 12, 1634 at Kenmure Castle ) was a Scottish nobleman .

He was the elder son of Sir Robert Gordon, 1st Baronet , from his first marriage to Lady Isabel Ruthven, daughter of William Ruthven, 1st Earl of Gowrie . In 1618 his father gave him some of his lands. From 1620 to 1621 he went on a grand tour to continental Europe.

He was one of the first to participate in the plan to establish Scottish colonies in North America , and in 1621 acquired the Galloway Barony in Nova Scotia .

When his father died on January 24, 1628 he inherited his title of baronet , of Lochinvar in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright , and was officially confirmed on March 20, 1628 as heir to his lands.

He was a supporter of King Charles I , who made him Viscount of Kenmure and Lord Lochinvar on May 8, 1633 . Both titles were awarded with the special addition that, in the absence of male descendants, they could also be passed on to the next male heir who bore the name and coat of arms of the Gordon family . During the following sessions of the Scottish Parliament he left early, under the pretext that his wife was ill, so that as a staunch Presbyterian he would not have to openly oppose the King, who was trying to establish the Anglican Church in Scotland.

During the next meeting of Parliament in August 1634, he returned home early because he was seriously ill. He died a few weeks later at the age of 35.

Around 1626 he had married Lady Jean Campbell, daughter of Archibald Campbell, 7th Earl of Argyll . With her he had several children who died young and before him. He left only one son and heir, John Gordon, 2nd Viscount of Kenmure . His widow married Sir Henry Montgomerie, son of Alexander Montgomerie, 6th Earl of Eglinton , in 1640 .
