John Gunther (musician)

John Gunther (* 1966 in Denver ) is an American saxophonist , composer and band leader of creative jazz .

Live and act

John Gunther began playing the saxophone during high school. There he was a member of a big band that performed at local gigs. He later worked a. a. with John Abercrombie , Buddy DeFranco , Dizzy Gillespie , Tom Harrell , Dewey Redman , Joe Williams , the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra and the Maria Schneider Orchestra. He was Composer in Residence at the Toronto Fringe Dance Festival in 2003 and composed the music for various independent films and animations.

As an assistant professor, he teaches jazz improvisation and jazz arrangement at Colorado University , leads various jazz ensembles and teaches saxophone playing. Gunther holds a bachelor's degree (BM) in music performance from Berklee College of Music and a master's (MM) degree in jazz studies from the University of Miami . Before working in Colorado, he taught at New York University . There he was an active part of the New York “downtown” music scene for several years and recorded five albums for the label Creative Improvised Music Projects (CIMP) as a band leader; He was also (with Bruce Arnold ) co-founder of the formation "Spooky Actions".

John Gunther is a member of the Denver-based band "Convergence".
