John Charles Harding, 2nd Baron Harding of Petherton ( February 12, 1928 - June 6, 2016 ) was a British peer and politician ( Conservative Party ).

Life

John Charles Harding, 2nd Baron Harding of Petherton was born to John Harding, 1st Baron Harding of Petherton and his wife Mary Gertrude Mabel Rooke. His father was a field marshal and governor of Cyprus .

He attended Marlborough College in the county of Wiltshire and Worcester College of Oxford University , where he met with a Bachelor of Arts graduated. He entered the British Army , where he served in the 11th Hussars (Prince Albert's Own, PAO), a cavalry regiment in the British Army. In 1968 he retired with the rank of major from the British Army.

After the death of his father, he inherited the title of 2nd Baron Harding of Petherton , of Nether Compton, in the County of Dorset , in the Peerage of the United Kingdom on January 20, 1989 . The title was created in 1958 for his father.

Harding was married to Harriet Hare, daughter of Major-General CB DSO James Francis Hare , since June 20, 1966 . His wife Harriet died on December 4, 2012. The marriage had three children, two sons and a daughter. His daughter Dido Harding , who has been a Life Peer member of the House of Lords since 2014 with the title Baroness Harding of Winscombe , is married to John Penrose , a member of the Conservative Party .

In 2003 Harding lived at Myrtle Cottage, near the village of Lamyatt in Somerset , England. He died in June 2016 at the age of 88. The heir to the title is his eldest son, William Allan John Harding (* 1969). The funeral service for Harding was held on July 15, 2016 at the Church of St. James the Great in Winscombe , Somerset.

Membership in the House of Lords

With the death of his father in January 1989 he inherited the title of Baron Harding of Petherton and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . He was a formal member of the House of Lords since January 20, 1989. In the House of Lords he sat for the Conservative Party.

Harding was an active member of the House of Lords. A total of 43 verbal contributions from 1989 to 1999 are documented in Hansard . On July 25, 1989, he first attended a meeting of the House of Lords.

Harding was a supporter of Britain's membership in the European Community . In October 1991 he spoke in the House of Lords on the common agricultural policy of the European Community. His last request to speak took the form of a questionnaire, in June 1999 in the context of a debate on the Kosovo war and the G8 summit .

In November 1998 he was present at the opening of parliament for the 1998/99 session. He was a member of the House of Lords until November 11, 1999. Its membership ended by the House of Lords Act 1999 .
