John Henry Muirhead

John Henry Muirhead (born April 28, 1855 in Glasgow , † May 24, 1940 in Rutherfield ) was an English philosopher who was best known for the founding of the book series Muirhead Library of Philosophy in 1890. In 1900 he became the University of Birmingham's first Chair of Philosophy in 1900.

Muirhead was taught at the Glasgow Academy from 1866 to 1879 and then moved to Glasgow University . He was heavily influenced by Edward Caird and is attributed to British idealism . In 1875 he went to Balliol College . His book series was first published by Allen & Unwin and existed until the 1970s. This series included works by Ernest Albee , Brand Blanshard , Francis Herbert Bradley , Axel Hägerström , Henri Bergson , Edmund Husserl , Bernard Bosanquet , Irving Thalberg, Jr. , Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel and George Edward Moore .

Together with Bernard Bosanquet, he founded the London Ethical Society in London in 1881 . In 1931 he was elected a member ( Fellow ) of the British Academy .
