John Huettner, of the California Yacht Club sailed, was in 1932 in Los Angeles at the Olympic Games in the 8-meter class Olympic champion . He was a crew member of the boat Angelita , led by skipper Owen Churchill , which won all four races, taking first place ahead of the only other boat, the Santa Maria from Canada. In the eliminations for the Games, Huettner had been a crew member of Pierpont Davis , who finished second behind Owen Churchill. Churchill took all of Davis' crew members to the games as substitutes and also used them in individual races, so that in addition to Huettner, Churchill and Davis also John Biby , Alphonse Burnand , Thomas Webster , William Cooper , Karl Dorsey , Kenneth Carey , Alan Morgan , Richard Moore and Robert Sutton received the gold medal.

Huettner worked as a lawyer in Los Angeles and was seen as an extra in several films. These included Love in the blink of an eye (1935), The Big Broadcast of 1938 (1938), Citizen Kane (1941), and Hunted by Agents (1943).
