Richard Moore, who for the California Yacht Club sailed, was in 1932 in Los Angeles at the Olympic Games in the 8-meter class Olympic champion . He was a crew member of the boat Angelita , led by skipper Owen Churchill , which won all four races, taking first place ahead of the only other boat, the Santa Maria from Canada. In the eliminations for the Games, Moore had been a crew member for Pierpont Davis , who finished second behind Owen Churchill. Churchill took all Davis' crew members with him to the games as substitutes and also used them in individual races, so that in addition to Moore, Churchill and Davis also John Biby , Alphonse Burnand , Thomas Webster , William Cooper , Karl Dorsey , John Huettner , Alan Morgan , Kenneth Carey and Robert Sutton received the gold medal.

Moore studied Political Science at the University of California, Los Angeles . He also attended Stanford Law School , but did not finish his studies. During World War II he served as a technical officer in the Pacific War and remained in the United States Navy Reserve as a battalion leader. After the war he worked as an independent real estate agent.
