John Huston Finley, Jr.
John Huston Finley (born February 11, 1904 in New York City , † June 11, 1995 in Exeter ) was an American classical philologist .
Life
He received his AB magna cum laude from Harvard in 1925, the Ph.D. ( Quo modo poetae epici graeci heroas sententias fabulas moribus publicis accommodaverint ) Harvard 1933 and the D. Litt. (hon.) Harvard, 1968. He taught as Eliot Professor of Greek Literature from 1942 to 1976 and as George Eastman visiting professor at Oxford University (1954–1955).
In 1946 Finley was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
