John "Jack" J. DeGioia (* 1957 in Orange, Connecticut ) is an American philosopher , university professor and since 2001 President of Georgetown University .

biography

After attending school, he first studied English at Georgetown University and graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts ( BA English ). He later became professor of philosophy there and was dean for student affairs between 1985 and 1992 before he was awarded a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) from the university in 1995.

In his courses DeGioia dealt with topics such as “ Ethics and Global Development”, “ Human Rights : A Culture in Crisis” and “Paths of Knowledge ”.

After serving as Vice President for Operational Affairs between 1998 and 2001, he succeeded Leo J. O'Donovan as President of Georgetown University in 2001 and has held this position ever since.

DeGioia is not only an honorary member of the John Carroll Society and the American Council on Education (ACE) , but has also been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2010 . He is also a member of the United States' UNESCO Commission.
