John J. Monaghan

John James Joseph Monaghan (born May 23, 1856 in Sumter , South Carolina , † January 7, 1935 ) was an American clergyman and bishop of Wilmington .

Life

John James Joseph Monaghan received the sacrament of ordination for the Diocese of Charleston on December 18, 1880 .

Pope Leo XIII. appointed him Bishop of Wilmington on January 26, 1897 . The Archbishop of Baltimore , James Gibbons , ordained him episcopal on May 9 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were his predecessor Alfred Allen Curtis and the Bishop of Charleston , Henry Pinckney Northrop .

During his term of office, seven new parishes and missions as well as eight schools were founded. He promoted the establishment of religious orders that established facilities for the elderly and the St. Francis Hospital. The Oblates of St. He won Francis de Sales in 1903 to found the Salesianum , a high school for boys in Wilmington.

Pope Pius XI accepted his resignation for health reasons on July 10, 1925 and appointed him titular bishop of Lydda .
