John L. Gerin
John Louis Gerin (born September 28, 1937 in St. Paul , Minnesota ) is an American medic.
Gerin studied at Georgetown University (Bachelor 1949) and the University of Tennessee in Knoxville , where he made his master's degree in 1961 and received his doctorate in 1964 in zoology. He was then a researcher at Abbott Laboratory, from 1966 as a group leader. From 1967 to 1978 he conducted research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory as director of the Rockville Laboratory. He is Professor Emeritus at the Catholic Medical College in Seoul and has been Professor and Director of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at Georgetown University since 1978.
Gerin is known for research on hepatitis viruses, the characterization and identification of different virus types, studies of their epidemiology, the development of diagnostic procedures and vaccines against hepatitis A and E. He worked closely with Robert H. Purcell of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) at the National Institutes of Health .
In 1977 he and Mario Rizzetto discovered the hepatitis D virus.
In 1998 he received the König Faisal Prize in Medicine with Robert H. Purcell .
He advised the Albert Sabin Vaccine Institute and was co-editor of the Journal of Clinical Laboratory Analysis, Hepatology , the Journal of Clinical Laboratory Investigation, and Vaccine Research.
