Robert H. Purcell (born December 19, 1935 ) is an American medic .

Purcell studied biochemistry at Baylor University (master’s degree ) and medicine at Duke University and went to the Epidemic Intelligence Center of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) after beginning specialist training in pediatrics (internship) in 1963 . Since 1974, he has headed hepatitis research at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health .

Purcell is known for research on hepatitis viruses, characterization and identification of different types of viruses, studies on their epidemiology, the development of diagnostic tests and vaccines against hepatitis A and E. He worked closely with John L. Gerin from the Georgetown University together .

In 1998 he received the König Faisal Prize in Medicine with Gerin and he has received numerous other prizes (Gorgas Medal, Squibb Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America, gold medal from the Canadian Liver Foundation). He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Microbiology (AAM) of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM).
