John Edward Leighton (born March 26, 1865 in Nottingham , † April 15, 1944 there ) was an English football player .

Already in his early youth, Leighton came into contact with the increasingly popular “Association Football” and played in Nottingham's student and junior teams. In 1884, the lightweight and dribbling winger joined the renowned Nottingham Forest in his hometown and stayed there for four years. On March 13, 1886, Leighton completed his only international match for the English national team against Ireland and won this game of the British Home Championship in Belfast 6-1 as a left winger . In parallel to his assignments at Forest, Leighton, who worked full-time in the stationery and paper trade, worked for the amateur club Corinthian FC between 1885 and 1889 .

After the end of his active football career, Leighton Forest stayed as a supporter, attended the home games of "his" club for the rest of his life and died in 1944 during an encounter at the City Ground .
