Jean-Baptiste Loeillet (baptized November 18, 1680 in Ghent , † July 19, 1730 in London ) was a Belgian composer , harpsichordist , flutist and oboist .

Life

John Loeillet's parents were the doctor Jean Baptiste François Loeillet (1653–1685) and his second wife Barbe (née Buys). He was baptized on November 18, 1680 in the Church of Saint James in Ghent . After the death of his father in 1685, he and his brother Jaques came to their uncle Pierre Loeillet (1651–1735), who also lived in Ghent. He was a violinist and concertmaster. In 1688 Pierre's son Jean-Baptiste Loeillet was born. John Loeillet has been recorded in London since 1705 and is now called John there. First he played in the orchestra of the Drury Lane Theater . Then he became a soloist in the Opera Orchestra of the Queen's Theater . He also gave harpsichord lessons. From 1710 he was financially independent. He started a weekly series of concerts, musical-at-homes , in which musical amateurs could make music with him under his direction and for a fee. He died a rich man with a large, valuable collection of musical instruments.

To distinguish it from Jean-Baptiste Loeillet de Gant , he is still referred to as John Loeillet or John of London . Some of his works were registered in England under the name Lully; confusion with Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632–1687) is therefore not excluded.

Loeillet wrote instrumental music, especially for the flute . It is said that he introduced the modern form of this instrument in England.
