John M. Francis

John Morgan Francis (born March 6, 1823 in Prattsburgh, New York ; died June 18, 1897 in Troy, New York ) was an American journalist and diplomat .

career

Francis began his career as a journalist at Ontario Messenger in 1838 and then wrote for the Wayne Sentinel (Palmyra), the Rochester Daily Advertiser (Rochester) and the Northern Budget (Troy), among others . In 1851 he founded his own newspaper in Troy , The Troy Daily Times, which over the next few decades developed into one of the highest-circulation papers in Upstate New York . Politically, he positioned himself and his newspaper at the side of the Republican Party and in later years was rewarded for services rendered with attractive diplomatic posts.

1871–1873 he was the United States Ambassador to Greece , 1882–1884 to Portugal and 1884–1885 envoy ( Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary ) to Austria-Hungary .
