John Maginley

Herbert John Maginley (born January 13, 1960 ) is a politician of the United Progressive Party and former tennis player from Antigua and Barbuda . From 2004 to 2014 he was a minister in the cabinet of Winston Baldwin Spencer .

Life

education

John Maginley grew up in Coolidge ( Parish of Saint George ) on Antigua . He attended Ms. Robinson School , St. Michael's School and Princess Margaret Secondary School in Antigua, the Lodge School in Barbados , then the Junior College in Palm Beach (Florida) and finally the Louisiana Technical Institute in Ruston (Louisiana) , which he graduated in 1981 with a bachelor's degree in finance.

Between 1986 and 1997 he took part in five seasons in the Davis Cup ; 1986 for the Davis Cup team of the British West Indies , 1991, 1992 and 1995 for the Davis Cup team of the East Caribbean Organization and 1997 for the Davis Cup team of Antigua and Barbuda . In a total of 16 missions, he was able to achieve four wins. He has been the captain of the Antigua and Barbuda Davis Cup team since 2017.

In 1990 he took part in the tennis competitions of the Central American and Caribbean Games.

politics

After an unsuccessful attempt in 1999, he was elected MP in the constituency of Saint John’s -Rural-North in 2004. He immediately became Minister for Health, Sport and Youth, since 2007 only for Health. After his re-election in 2009, he was Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation and Culture. In 2014 he was not re-elected.

During his tenure as minister he also served as President of the Executive Committee of the Pan American Health Organization and Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the Caribbean Tourism Organization Council of Ministers.

He was president of the Rotary Club of Antigua, first vice president of the Antigua Cricket Association, and committee chairman of the local organizing committee (LOC) of the World Cup Cricket Antigua Inc.

Personal

John Maginley is the father of two sons, Jody and Aliah. Jody Maginley has also played tennis in the Davis Cup for Antigua and Barbuda.
