John Marsden

John Marsden (born September 27, 1950 in Melbourne ) is an Australian writer of youth literature.

Life

John Marsden was born in 1950 as the third child in a family of four. He spent most of his youth in the Australian countryside, moving first to Kyneton and later to Devonport . At the age of ten, his family moved to Sydney , where he attended The King's School in Parramatta . This school is known for its military style of teaching.

After graduating from this school, he began studying law and art at the University of Sydney . He worked in a mortuary as a security guard before becoming an English teacher . He taught at Geelong Grammar School for nine years and became the head of the English department on the school's Timbertop campus.

In 1982 he was arrested for protesting against the construction of the Franklin Dam . Since all the prisons nearby were full, he was taken to the strictly protected HM Prison Risdon . He later stated that he used this experience to write some passages in Dear Tracey, Dear Mandy, and the Tomorrow series.

Writing

He became known through the Tomorrow - series . Tomorrow When The War Began saw 26 reprints in Australia. His books have been translated into 15 languages ​​and have received numerous awards. Not all of his works have been translated into the German language.

Further life

Marsden currently holds writers' conferences for both people who already write and young people who want to learn to write. He holds the workshops personally. At times he works at the theater.

Tomorrow series
