John Maxwell, 3rd Lord Maxwell
John Maxwell, 3rd Lord Maxwell ( 1454 - September 9, 1513 near Branxton, Northumberland ), was a Scottish nobleman .
Life
His father was John Maxwell, Master of Maxwell († 1484); his mother was Janet Crichton, daughter of George Crichton , 1st Earl of Caithness .
Since his father died before his grandfather Robert Maxwell, 2nd Lord Maxwell , John inherited his lands and the title Lord Maxwell when the latter died around 1485 . In 1486 he was named "Warden of the West Marches".
On June 11, 1488 he fought in the Battle of Sauchieburn on the side of King Jacob III. against his rebelling son, Crown Prince James, Duke of Rothesay . Jacob III was killed in battle and his victorious son was crowned as Jacob IV. Maxwell attended the first parliament of King James IV in the same year.
On July 30, 1508, there was a major argument in the course of which Maxwell and his followers drove the Lord of Sanquhar from Dumfries , but slew the Lairds of Dalzell , von Creichlaw and a few others. For this act he was sentenced by the king to imprisonment, in addition he had to pay a large sum of money as a penalty for those who were subordinate to him. He was released between 1510 and 1512. In 1513 he took part in the king's army in the campaign to England and was killed like the latter in the defeat at the Battle of Flodden Field .
Marriage and offspring
Between February 15, 1491 and February 20, 1492 he had married Agnes Stewart († after 1530), a daughter of Sir Alexander Stewart, 3rd Laird of Garlies. From the marriage he had four sons and four daughters:
