John Maxwell, Master of Maxwell

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

John Maxwell, Master of Maxwell (* around 1430, † July 22, 1484 at Kirtlemure) was a Scottish nobleman.

Life

His father was Robert Maxwell, 2nd Lord Maxwell ; his mother was Janet Forrester, a daughter of John Forrester of Corstorphine.

John Maxwell was born probably around 1430. On February 14, 1477, he contracted to support his mother in the administration of lands that his father had previously given her. After he had withdrawn from all business in 1474, he carried his title Lord Maxwell and is therefore sometimes counted as 3rd Lord Maxwell. In the session documents of the Scottish Parliament of October 4, 1479, both father and son are listed as members.

On July 22, 1484 he was fatally wounded while defending against an English attack on "Albany and Douglas" near Kirtlemure; his father survived him by about a year.

By his marriage, in 1454, to Janet Crichton, daughter of George Crichton, 1st Earl of Caithness , he had nine sons; John (later 3rd Lord), George, Robert, James, Homer, John, Thomas, William, Christian, and one daughter; Janet.

Remarks

  1. No military actions from the British side are known from this time. It was probably a major advance by English Border Reivers via Dumfries towards Edinburgh .
