John McGuire (composer)

John McGuire (born June 27, 1942 in Artesia , California ) is an American contemporary music composer , pianist , organist and music editor who lived in Germany for a long time .

life and work

John McGuire was born in Artesia, California, in 1942. He graduated from Occidental College in Los Angeles , California, and later became a student of Krzysztof Penderecki and Karlheinz Stockhausen . After marrying soprano Beth Griffith, he worked on tape music using her voice as material. The result is a cappella .

In 1971 he received the Gaudeamus Prize .

He was active in Cologne for a long time , but returned to the United States in 1998. He taught as visiting professor at Columbia University in New York .
