John McNair

John Alexander McNair (born June 8, 1800 in Bucks County , Pennsylvania , †  August 12, 1861 in Evansport , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1851 and 1855 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John McNair enjoyed an academic education and then worked as a teacher. In 1825 he was headmaster at the Loller Academy in Hatboro . In Abington he founded a boys' school. Between 1845 and 1848 he was a bailiff in Montgomery County . At that time he settled in Norristown . Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party .

In the congressional election of 1850 McNair was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded John Freedley on March 4, 1851 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1855 . These were shaped by the events leading up to the civil war . From 1853 McNair was chairman of the crafts committee.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, John McNair settled on a plantation in Prince William County , Virginia. He died on August 12, 1861 in Evansport.
