John Middleton (anthropologist)

John Middleton (born May 22, 1921 in London , † February 27, 2009 in New Haven (Connecticut) ) was a British anthropologist, Africanist and colonial official. From 1981 until his retirement in 1991, he was Professor of Anthropology and Religious Studies at Yale University , having previously taught at the University of London , New York University and elsewhere. He has done anthropological research in Uganda , Nigeria and Ghana .

In 1958 he worked in Zanzibar on land leases under the central Swahili (published under the title Land Tenure in Zanzibar , 1961) and later in the 1980s under the northern Swahili of the city of Lamu in Kenya in a broad ethnographic study published in 1992 under the title The World of the Swahili appeared.

He wrote a monograph on the religion of the Lugbara (1960) and was the editor of the Encyclopaedia of Africa South of the Sahara (1997). Middleton died at Yale on February 27, 2009.
