John Muir

John Muir (born June 18, 1874 in Castle Douglas , Scotland , † August 3, 1947 in Riversdale , Cape Province ) was a Scottish doctor and plant collector in southern Africa. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " John Muir ".

Live and act

John Muir studied art and medicine at Saint Andrews University from 1890 to 1892 . He came to South Africa in 1902 and practiced in various places. He botanized and collected a lot; his collections went u. a. to the University of Stellenbosch and the National Herbarium in Pretoria. He wrote The Flora of Riversdale and Seed-drift of South Africa . He was married to Susanna Steyn. His daughter Hortense Muir (fl. 1927) sent living plant material to Nicholas Edward Brown . It was honored by the species name hortenseae .

In 1925, Muir discovered a succulent euphorbie , which was described four years later by Rudolf Marloth as Euphorbia susannae .

Honor taxon

In honor of John Muir named Nicholas Edward Brown , the monotypic genus Muiria from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae).
