John Parish , from 1816 knight of Senftenberg , from 1817 baron von Senftenberg (born February 23, 1774 in Hamburg , † September 2, 1858 in Senftenberg , Bohemia ) was a merchant and astronomer.

Life

Parish was the eldest son of the Hamburg merchant John Parish and his wife Henriette, b. Todd. Him and his brother Richard transferred the father in 1796 the company's management Parish & Co . Before the French occupation of Hamburg, the family emigrated to England in 1806, from where Parish financed the Austrian coalition troops during the Napoleonic Wars .

On August 27, 1814, he married Catherine Birney in St. George's Church in London. In 1815 Parish withdrew from all business and acquired from Weriand Alfred zu Windisch-Graetz the lords of Senftenberg and Lititz (Czech: Litice) with 20 villages in Eastern Bohemia. He chose Senftenberg Castle in Northern Bohemia as his retirement home. On February 24, 1816 Parish was awarded the incolat for admission to the Bohemian knighthood for his services in the coalition wars . In 1816 he was raised to the hereditary baron status with the predicate of Senftenberg .

Parish devoted himself to astronomical observations. He set up a private observatory at Senftenberg Castle, for which he employed the astronomer and later abbot Paul Hackel. Theodor Brorsen got a job at Parish as Hackel's successor . Together with Brorsen, Parish discovered several planetoids. Under the heir George Parish the instruments were sold and the observatory was closed.

In neighboring Helkowitz (Czech Helvíkovice), which was part of the large estate, Parish founded a pheasantry, on the site of which he had a hunting lodge built in the Empire style. Since he remained childless, George Parish, the son of younger brother Richard Parish (1776-1860) took over the inheritance.
