John Peyton (2007)

John Stephens Peyton (born July 28, 1964 in Jacksonville , Florida ) is an American businessman and politician ( Republican Party ). He was Mayor of Jacksonville from July 1, 2003 to July 1, 2011.

Life

John Peyton grew up in Jacksonville. He studied at Mercer University , where he received his bachelor's degree. Prior to taking office as mayor, Peyton was a board member of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority. In 2003 he was selected in a Republican Party primary as a candidate for mayoral election in Jacksonville in the year that in the May 13, 2003 election, he prevailed against Nat Glover with 57 percent of the vote. On July 1, 2003, he replaced his party colleague John Delaney , who was no longer allowed to run for two consecutive terms. On March 20, 2007 Delaney was with 76.2 percent of the vote against the Democrat Jackie Brown.

After Peyton's second term ended on July 1, 2011, he became Vice President of Gate Petroleum , founded by his father Herb Peyton and one of the largest privately held companies in Florida. He was succeeded as mayor by Alvin Brown . Peyton has been President of Gate Petroleum since January 2012, after his father further retired from managing the company. John Peyton has been married to the doctor Kathryn Pearson since 2003 and has two sons (* 2005 and 2007).
