professional
Macclesfield Town
John Rooney made his Macclesfield Town first team debut on March 24, 2008, four months before his actual contract signing. On March 28, 2009, he scored his first goal of his career, against Dagenham & Redbridge .
At the end of the 2009/2010 season, his contract with Macclesfield ran out. In February 2010, he completed a trial training at Derby County . The trainer Nigel Clough found his training performance okay, but wanted to wait for a second test training session.
At the end of the season Rooney's contract with Macclesfield Town was not renewed and he played for Huddersfield Town . A possible transfer to Derby County had meanwhile failed. For Huddersfield, he was on the field at some preparation games. No contract was offered to Rooney, however.
New York Red Bulls
In the fall of 2010, Rooney trained with the US team Seattle Sounders FC for a test. Through this trial training he was able to secure a place for the next MLS draft. The Sounders themselves had no option to sign Rooney. A week later he was still training with the Portland Timbers .
On December 28, 2010 Rooney signed a contract with Major League Soccer and played in January 2011 with the MLS Combine in Florida to be recommended for one of the 18 MLS clubs. On January 13th, he was selected by the New York Red Bulls in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft.
