John Russell (* 1954 in London ) is a British guitarist specializing in free jazz and new improvisational music .

Live and act

John Russell began playing the guitar in 1965 and began performing in clubs in and around London from 1971. From 1972 he belonged to the British free jazz scene and played in clubs such as The Little Theater Club , Ronnie Scott 's, The Institute of Contemporary Arts , as well as with the artist groups The Musicians 'Co-Op and the London Musicians' Collective . In 1974 he played in a quintet with pianist Steve Beresford ( teatime ). From 1974 onwards he also worked as a teacher, had television and radio appearances and toured extensively in the UK and Europe. In 1978 his first album with solo improvisations ( From Next to Last ) was released.
In June 1980 he appeared in Günter Christmann's band together with Maggie Nichols , Maarten Altena and Paul Lovens at the Moers Jazz Festival; In 1981 he founded the formation Quaqua and then recorded a number of albums for the Emanem and ACTA labels, including a. with John Butcher and Phil Durrant . In 1988 MOPOMOSO co-founded the long-term concert series in the field of improvised music .

In addition to his own projects, Russell worked in the Butcher / Durrant / Russell Trio , the Chris Burn Ensemble ( Navigation 1997), in a duo with Stefan Keune , as well as with Roger Turner , Phil Minton , Gina Southgate , Evan Parker , Hugh Davies and Luc Houtkamp and in the formation London Air Lift (1996/87) with Evan Parker, John Edwards and Mark Sanders . In 2005 he played in the Evan Parker Octet and in the ensemble of Lol Coxhill , in 2006 he was part of a formation with John Butcher, Roger Turner, Thomas Lehn , Dorothea Schürch and Günter Christmann . He appears in a trio with Roger Turner and Michel Doneda .
