Stefan Keune (* 1965 in Oberhausen ) is a saxophonist (sopranino, alto and tenor saxophone) of free jazz and European improvisation music .

Live and act

After Keune had previously not been interested in music, he saw Peter Brötzmann in action in 1982 and decided to learn the saxophone. He studied classical playing technique with private teachers and quickly developed into free improvisation in terms of style. He played with local formations and for a while in a trio with Martin Blume . At the beginning of the 1990s he played in a quartet with Dietmar Diesner , Matthias Bauer and Paul Lytton . In 1991 he formed his first formation under his own name, the Stefan Keune Trio , with bassist Hans Schneider and drummer Paul Lytton; with this band the album Loft was created in 1992 . In place of Lovens, Achim Krämer now plays in the trio. In 1997 he founded the Ensemble Realtime with Schneider, Lytton, Thomas Lehn , Gunda Gottschalk , Melvyn Poore , Mark Charig , Erhard Hirt , Ute Völker and Philippe Micol .

He gained attention through playing with the British guitarist John Russell , with whom he formed the Beware of Art quartet (with Lovens and Schneider) in 1993 . In 1997 Keune and Russell performed together as a duo at concerts; The album Excerpts & Offerings was recorded on the Acta label in January 2001. This connection was significant to Keune's international recognition; the duo visited Japan in 2001. In 2000 Keune began playing the alto saxophone in conjunction with the sopranino.

Keune has been playing regularly in a trio with Dominic Lash and Steve Noble since 2013 . Among other things, they performed at the Moers Festival 2017. Keune has been a member of XPACT since 2017 ( Erhard Hirt , Hans Schneider, Paul Lytton) instead of Wolfgang Fuchs, who died in 2016 .

In addition to his collaboration with Paul Lovens, John Russell and Hans Schneider, Keune played with many musicians from the British improvisation scene, such as Roger Turner , Phil Durrant , John Butcher and with representatives of the continental European scene such as Raoul van der Weide, Onno Govaert, John Dikeman, Mats Gustafsson , Raymond Strid , Radu Malfatti or Peter Kowald .
