John Sangster (born November 17, 1928 in Melbourne , † October 26, 1995 in Brisbane ) was an Australian jazz musician ( composer , arranger , vibraphonist and drummer ). After Digby Fairweather , he was one of the central Australian jazz musicians of the 1980s.

Live and act

Sangster was first known as a trombonist with Graeme Bell and his Australian Jazz Band , with whom he also toured in Great Britain, Germany, Japan and Korea between 1950 and 1955; he also made recordings with Humphrey Lyttelton . He switched to cornet and then drums and then played with Ray Price. In the late 1950s he discovered the vibraphone and modern jazz . In the early 1960s he was part of Don Burrows ' group before forming his own ensemble and studying the music of Sun Ra and Archie Shepp . In 1967 he performed with the band von Burrows during Expo 67 in Montreal (later also on the occasion of Expo '70 in Osaka ). In 1969 he opened up to rock music and belonged to the progressive rock band Tully , which accompanied the Australian production of the musical Hair . He reflected on these experiences in his album Ahead of Hair . During the 1970s Sangster released a number of albums inspired by The Lord of the Rings , such as The Hobbit Suite 1973. With Alex Pertout, Graeme Lyall, Keith Hounslow and the Pro Musica Strings, he played the compositions of Tony Gould .

In addition, Sangster also wrote film music for documentaries , for example for early films on nature conservation that the Australian Museum produced in 1971 and 1972 ( Australia and all that jazz ). In 1988 he published his autobiography Seeing the Rafters .
