Don Burrows

Donald Vernon Burrows AO (* 8. August 1928 in Sydney , † 12. March 2020 ) was an Australian jazz - flautist , clarinetist and saxophonist . He was considered the most successful jazz musician in Australia.

Life

Burrows worked as a professional musician as a teenager; In 1944, at the age of 16, he was principal clarinet with Jim Gussey's ABC Dance Band . In 1950 he went on his first tour of the USA, where he was offered a job in Count Basie's band. He made many other tours through Europe, Asia, North and South America and worked with musicians such as Oscar Peterson , Dizzy Gillespie , Nat King Cole , Mel Tormé , Tony Bennett , James Morrison , John Sangster , Bob Sedergreen , Cleo Laine , Frank Sinatra and Kate Ceberano . In addition to numerous albums as a sideman, he recorded around forty albums with his own bands , starting with A Tribute to Freddy Gardner (1960).

In 1972 he was a guest at the Montreux Jazz Festival , shortly afterwards at the Newport Jazz Festival . The following year he was the first Australian jazz musician to receive a gold record with the album Just the Beginning due to his sales . In the field of jazz, according to Tom Lord , he was involved in 166 recording sessions between 1944 and 2011.

At the New South Wales Conservatorium of Music he initiated the first jazz study program in Australia. He directed the television show The Don Burrows Collection for six years . In 1973 he was the first Australian jazz musician to be awarded the title of Member of the British Empire . Burrows was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Australia in 1987 in recognition of his services to music, in particular jazz music, and was appointed Living National Treasure of Australia in 1988 and 1998 . In 1991 he was inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame . The University of Sydney and Edith Cowan University awarded him an honorary doctorate in music (2000 and 2001) . In 2000 he received the Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Award for his services to Australian music .
