John M. Silk (2019)

John M. Silk (born September 15, 1956 in Kwajalein , Marshall Islands ) is a politician of the Marshall Islands.

biography

After schooling, he studied from 1976 to 1979 Law on the Regis University in Denver , USA . On his return he was editor and reporter for the Marshall Islands Journal before serving as legal advisor to the Micronesian Association for Legal Services from 1981 to 1990 . He then worked as a lawyer in the law firm Stege and Associates until 1993, before he worked as an independent lawyer until 2000.

In January 2000 he was appointed Minister for Resources and Development by President Kessai Note . He held this office for two terms until 2007 and in 2003 had to deal with growing illegal fishing and the resulting decline in the population of sharks in Bikini Atoll . Then in 2007 he was elected Senator and thus a member of the House of Lords, the Council of Chiefs (Council of Iroij). Since then he has represented the inhabitants of the Ebon Atoll there . In this function, he also campaigned against nuclear weapons tests in the Marshall Islands in September 2008 .

On March 27, 2009, he was finally appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs by President Litokwa Tomeing . In January 2012 he was replaced by Phillip H. Muller .

Since January 2016 he has been Foreign Minister again under President Hilda Heine .
