John Sitgreaves

John Sitgreaves (* 1757 in England , † March 4, 1802 in Halifax , North Carolina ) was an American lawyer and politician . In 1785 he was a delegate for North Carolina in the Continental Congress ; later he became a federal judge .

Career

John Sitgreaves graduated from Eton College . He then emigrated to America, where he settled in New Bern in the British province of North Carolina . After studying law and being admitted to the bar, he began working there in his profession. In the 1770s he joined the revolutionary movement. During the War of Independence he served as a lieutenant in the Continental Army . There he was part of the staff of General Caswell. In the meantime he was also the administrator of confiscated property from British loyalists . Between 1777 and 1779 he was employed in the administration of the North Carolina Senate ; in 1784, 1786, 1787, and 1788 he sat as a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina , whose speaker he had been since 1787. In 1785 he represented his state in the Continental Congress.

Since December 20, 1790, John Sitgreaves was the successor to John Stokes judge at the federal district court for North Carolina. He held this office until his death on March 4, 1802.
