John Tambouras (born January 30, 1979 in Darwin ) is a former Australian football player who won national titles on three continents over the course of his career.
Career
Tambouras began his career at the Greek club South Melbourne FC in the National Soccer League (NSL) and came there when they won the championship in 1998/99 to a league use. In 2000 he moved to Greece to FC Kalamata , for which he played until 2003. He then returned to the NSL and played in the last year of its existence for the New Zealand club Football Kingz .
In the newly founded Australian professional league A-League for the 2005/06 season he came under the only representative of New Zealand, the New Zealand Knights , formerly Football Kingz. After a disappointing season with only six points from 21 games, he moved to Malaysia to Pahang FA , with whom he won the Malaysian FA Cup in 2006. In late 2006, he returned for a short time to the Knights and played three more games in the A-League towards the end of the season, in which he scored one goal.
In January 2007 he completed a trial session at the Romanian club Universitatea Craiova , but received no contract and only found a new club with the Irish first division club Drogheda United in the summer of that year . With Drogheda Tambouras won the Irish championship in 2007 and came to a total of 23 league appearances for the club until his departure after the 2008 season. He then played for six months for the Azerbaijani club Neftçi Baku before returning to Australia, where he signed a one-year contract with the newly formed A-League team North Queensland Fury .
In February 2010, Tambouras was invited to a trial training session by the Chinese club Guangzhou Evergrande . During his guest appearance, the club was sentenced to relegation to the second division for bribes going back to 2007, but Tambouras finally signed a financially lucrative one-year contract with the future second division club. His guest appearance there ended after a few months and Tambouras then ended his professional career. He then took a position as a coach in the youth field at the regional football association of the Northern Territory .
