John Tebbel

John William Tebbel (born November 16, 1912 in Boyne City , Charlevoix County , Michigan , † October 10, 2004 in Durham , North Carolina ) was an American journalist and media historian .

Tebbel grew up on a farm and began working as a local reporter for the Mount Pleasant Times in Michigan when he was 14 . In 1935 he made his bachelor's degree at Central Michigan University , and in 1937 his master's degree from Columbia Journalism School . After graduation, Tebbel served as a reporter for the Detroit Free Press , editor of The Providence Journal, and managing editor of American Mercury . In 1943 he moved to the editorial office of the Sunday edition of the New York Times . He taught at both Columbia Journalism School and from 1949 to 1976 atNew York University .
