John Thain

John Alexander Thain (born May 26, 1955 in Antioch , Illinois ) is an American manager. He has been CEO of the American bank CIT Group Inc. since February 2010 .

Life

Prior to his current position at the CIT Group, which specializes in mid-market financing, Thain was CEO of the investment bank Merrill Lynch & Co. from December 2007 to January 2009. On January 22, 2009, John Thain resigned from this position. The resignation was apparently related to allegations of excessive spending and early bonus payments to Merrill Lynch managers in December 2008, i. H. immediately prior to Bank of America's acquisition of Merrill Lynch .

Prior to that, Thain was CEO of the NYSE Euronext Inc. , the NYSE and Euronext merger in June 2006. Since 2004, Thain has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the NYSE and was instrumental in promoting its IPO in 2006. He was previously at Goldman Sachs , most recently as President and COO .

Thain holds a BA in Electrical Engineering from MIT (1977) and an MBA from Harvard (1979).
