John Thiessen (* 1906 on the island of Sumatra ; † 1986 ) was an American-Dutch clergyman who became known as a missionary in North Sumatra among the Indonesian people of the Batak .
Life
John Thiessen was born in Sumatra and studied in Oxford . He spoke eight languages and was called with a wink but respectfully the jungle missionary, missionary of the Indians, evangelist of the headhunters, preacher all over the world.
He became known in Germany in 1959 when he proclaimed " Christ on the Reeperbahn " in front of the Davidwache . In the 1980s he achieved great popularity among children and young people through his exciting travel reports and stories about wild animals in distant countries, combined with impressive sermons about faith. It was very important to him to get children excited about Jesus.
Quotes
- “What is your belief: steering wheel or spare wheel? Is every movement controlled by a master hand, or do we just switch to God's help if we have a breakdown in life? "
- “I owe the best translation of the Bible to my mother. She translated the Bible into life. "
Honors
Indian tribes awarded him the title of chaplain and presented him with an honorable headdress.
Discography
John Thiessen first published two records with stories from his life as a missionary for children in the listening series Onkel Peters Kinderstunde with Peter van Woerden . From 1970 he produced together with Margret Birkenfeld and its Wetzlar children's choirs six albums of his own Hörreihe Dr. Thiessen tells (initially: “On the way with Dr. Thiessen”, or “Dr. Thiessen” for short), which became known through the exotic experiences of the jungle missionary and not least his imitation of jungle noises and animal sounds.
