The Wetzlar Children's Choir (initially also known as the Wetzlar Sunday School Choir or the Wetzlar Children's Choir ) was a children's choir that, under the direction of Margret Birkenfeld , dominated Christian children's music in Germany for decades and had a lasting impact. In 1996, the Children's Choir in preparation for the withdrawal Margaret Birkenfeld of the chorus line or with the delivery was the same at its successor Konny Cramer with the Wetzlar chick chorus merged to Wetzlar chick and children choir . In 1997 this choir community was finally renamed Sunshine Kids .

history

The choir was initially set up around children's missionary Ruth Frey for her radio show “Fröhliche Kinderstunde” on Evangeliums-Rundfunk . Due to the flowing transitions to the book and record publisher Hermann Schulte, which was also based in Wetzlar, as well as active support and support from the Dutch organist Peter van Woerden , the first recordings were soon made. The publisher decided to add a sublabel called Frohe Message for Children to its record label Frohe Message im Lied . In search of the right choir director, publisher Hermann Schulte turned to recorder and violin teacher Margret Birkenfeld from Dortmund. After initial hesitation, she accepted the offer and in 1961 took over the direction of the children's choir.

Intensive production work followed in cooperation with Peter van Woerden . The children's choir released a new EP every six weeks in the series later titled Uncle Peter's Children's Lesson. The individual episodes were mostly based on the same structure. A Bible verse provided the title and the subject, which Peter van Woerden explained with stories, audio scenes and his own explanations and narratives. In addition, the choir and its soloists sang songs specially composed for the respective record - such as the always obligatory setting of the Bible verse - or thematically appropriate well-known hymns and chorales .

When Peter van Woerden decided to move to Israel with his family for a few years in the early 1970s, Margret Birkenfeld, now known entirely as "Aunt Margret", worked out her first own manuscript with Swim With Against the Current , to which she also thematically suitable songs had to write myself. So far she had mostly limited herself to setting verses of poetry to music. The LP was released in 1973 and should be a successful children's album - not least because of its theme song “Be a living fish”, which is one of the classics of Christian children's songs today. Margret Birkenfeld remained largely true to the concept of a mixed form of spoken passages, scenes and songs until the 1990s.

The entire spectrum of Margret Birkenfeld's musical work developed from the children's choir. First, she separated the growing children's choir into two choirs, differentiated by age: In addition to the children's choir for 9 to 15-year-olds, the Wetzlar Chick Choir was created with younger singers up to the age of 5. Around 1973 the voices of the children's choir that had grown up formed the Wetzlar girls' choir and finally around 1976 - after the male voices returned from the change of voice - the Wetzlar youth choir . The children's choir collaborated with singers like Jan Vering and Johnny Jaworski for their children's projects and was, not least, a musical breeding ground for later pop musicians like Hella Heizmann .

From 1996, the children's choir only performed together with the chick choir as the Wetzlar chick and children's choir before Margret Birkenfeld finally introduced Konny Cramer as the new choir director on the album Kunterbunte Liederwelt in 1997, handing her over the choir direction after more than thirty years of choir work. Under Konny Cramer, the choir changed its name to Sunshine Kids and is under this name to this day an integral part of Christian children's music.
