Ruth Frey (* 1924 in Herford ; † May 29, 2012 in Altenkirchen im Westerwald ) was a German evangelical children's missionary .

Life

After graduating from high school in 1942, Ruth Frey taught English at a school and worked in the accounting department in her father's office. She was with two of her sisters as a singing trio in many congregations and for the mission work “Youth for Christ”, for which she was active in child labor. After that she taught for two years at what would later become the Brake Bible School . From 1951 to 1974 she was active in evangelical work with children and young people at the New Life Mission . Then she took over the Christian women's work there and worked until her retirement in 1987 with a focus on seminar work.

She built up the work with children and young people at the plant through activities such as child free time. She became known throughout Germany as “Aunt Ruth” through her radio program Diejoyliche Kinderstunde , which was broadcast once a week on Radio Luxembourg from 1956 to 1966 . The show with stories and songs was the first German Christian radio program for children. For its musical arrangement, she gathered a small group of local children who enjoyed singing around her. This group, called the “Wetzlar Children's Choir”, was only sporadically supervised in the first few years by Ruth Frey and organist Peter van Woerden , but after Margret Birkenfeld took up the choir direction in 1966 as the Wetzlar children's choir, it was to shape Christian children's music for the coming decades . The later singer-songwriter Hella Heizmann also sang in the group . Ruth Frey worked for many years at the annual children's festival of the Liebenzeller Mission .

In 1987 she co-founded the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Biblische Frauenarbeit (ABF) and chaired it until 1998 and as its second chairman until 2004.

In addition to collections of children's stories, she also published records and song books. The magazine The happy children's hour appeared for the first time in 1965. As a speaker, she was on lecture tours at home and abroad and belonged to the Gütersloh Brethren.
