The Wetzlarer Jugendchor (in some cases also: Jugendchor Wetzlar ) was a Christian choir of the 1970s and 1980s and shaped, among other things, the youth choir movement in Christian music history in Germany.
history
The choir grew out of the music work of the composer and leading music producer Margret Birkenfeld at the then Hermann Schulte publishing house with her Wetzlar children's choir . Here a young female choir was formed from the growing female singers while the male singers of the same age were changing their voices. The later Wetzlar girls' choir performed itself in its first years as a Wetzlar youth choir . However, when the mature male voices returned to the choir community after a few years, the name was given to the newly created mixed choir . Officially founded in 1975, the first work was published two years later under the title Hell shines the sun . In the meantime, the female voices appeared several times as girls' choir in Margret Birkenfeld's children's productions. The repertoire of the Wetzlar Youth Choir consisted mainly of the New Spiritual Song with titles by the choir director herself and other songwriters such as Peter Strauch , Hella Heizmann , Gerhard Schnitter , Manfred Siebald and Peter van Woerden . This made the choir an important carrier of the phenomenon of the youth choir movement within the free churches in the entire German-speaking area.
With Sing ein Lied - reu dich mit , the follow-up album was released in 1979, arranged like the debut by Dirk Schmalenbach and accompanied by his band Eden . In 1980 the choir released its third album Du hast dich zugewandt us , first arranged by Johannes Nitsch . It became late in 1982 and finally Geborgen in 1984 .
In addition to his work within the youth choir movement, Margret Birkenfeld also involved the choir in various conceptual projects for classical church music - often together with other ensembles such as the Wetzlar studio choir , Wetzlar gospel choir or the Jubilate choir . These include portrait concepts for Paul Gerhardt and Gerhard Tersteegen , themed albums such as choir collections or Christmas and Easter songs. In 1986 Margret Birkenfeld retired and handed over her position as head of the music department at Gerth Medien to Jochen Rieger . He not only took over the management of the in-house studio choir , but also the Wetzlar youth choir . However, in 1988 Margret Birkenfeld released Wer only den liebe Gott is the last concept album with both choirs. Under Jochen Rieger, the Wetzlar Youth Choir brought out the concept album Psalm 23 in 1987 in collaboration with the Prisma choir . In the same year, however , Rieger founded a new, more modern choral community with Perspektiven , which integrated elements such as choreography into its program that were previously uncommon in the youth choir movement . After a few following guest appearances on solo albums by artist friends, the Wetzlar Youth Choir broke up into this new formation and the Schulte & Gerth Studio Choir at the end of the 1980s .
In 1998, Margret Birkenfeld gathered the former choir members for a first reunion when the missionary work Euroteam for the benefit concert Festival of Songs in the Siegerlandhalle, alongside other nostalgic and contemporary Christian artists such as Doris Loh , Manfred Siebald , Wilfried Mann and the Wir-singen-für- Jesus choirs , invited. In 2008 the former choir members organized another revival for the 80th birthday of the long-time director. The singers also worked in the Unforgotten choirs of the Unforgotten concert series , which were put together as a project .
