The Wetzlar studio choir was a mixed choir of Christian music with an evangelical character. It emerged from Margret Birkenfeld's production activities at Hermann Schulte's book and record publisher, initially as HSW Studiochor , was renamed S + G Studiochor in 1980 , and finally referred to as Wetzlarer Studiochor - especially to differentiate it from the cast and choral sound, the following Schulte & Gerth studio choir under the direction of Jochen Rieger .

history

The Wetzlar studio choir was formed in the 1960s from Margret Birkenfeld's choir work with the Wetzlar Evangelium Choir, which was founded as a choir of the book and record publisher Hermann Schulte . With its growing range of activities - including increased concert engagements - the choir director repeatedly assembled selected singers for individual studio projects to form a significantly smaller vocal formation, which was initially unspecifically and differently referred to on the records as a small choir , double quartet or members of the Wetzlar Gospel Choir . Later in the term established HSW Studio choir , but all as a collective term nameless special choirs unterschiedlichster producer of the publishing house served (: book and record publishing HSW stood as an acronym for H ermann S chulte, W etzlar). Choirs under the direction of Klaus Heizmann or Siegfried Fietz , among others - all of them with a wide variety of singers and their own style - were called HSW studio choirs . The studio choirs under the direction of Margret Birkenfeld, for their part, consisted of well-known Christian interpreters such as Doris Loh , Ria Deppert , Martin Gerhard , Ulrich Brück or Wilfried Mann, as well as selected singers from their non-project-related formations such as the Wetzlar Gospel Choir and later the Wetzlar Youth Choir . Due to the undifferentiated name of the choir, which later changed again - among other things due to the name change of the superordinate house - the choir is now retrospectively referred to as the Wetzlar studio choir based on the rest of Margret Birkenfeld's choirs .

In its early days, the Wetzlar studio choir first appeared on numerous publications by Christian artists - including the singing duo Elsa & Ernst August Eicker or soloists such as Doris Loh , Heinz Bösche , Heinz Gregel and Wilfried Mann . In the 1970s he appeared on isolated concept productions by Margret Birkenfeld, such as in 1972 on the Christmas album Machet die Tore far next to the Wetzlar Children's Choir and the Wetzlar Evangelium Choir, with four of his own titles as an independent interpreter. In 1982 the choir released with Singt and finally plays its first full-fledged concept album with guitar choir songs . In 1983 the most successful album of the choir in terms of sales followed under the title Stern, which I look at . In 1987, expanded by six earlier recordings for CD release, the concept album with gospel songs is still one of the publisher's most popular music productions and has been continuously reissued in this version for decades. In 1984 Wake Up My Heart appeared and sing with morning and evening songs. In 1985 the choir released a second concept album with guitar choir songs under the title God will carry you ; also a second album with gospel songs under the title Closer, my God, to you . In 1986 the Christmas album was released See, I proclaim great joy to you . In the same year, Jochen Rieger took over the management of the music department at the publishing house, now renamed Schulte & Gerth, and was thus officially the new director of the choir. The album Welch ein Freund ist Unser Jesus was released under Margret Birkenfeld in 1987 and in 1989, in collaboration with the Wetzlar Youth Choir, the farewell album of both choirs from their founder and long-time director under the title Who only lets God rule .

Under Jochen Rieger, the choir changed mainly through merging with the Wetzlar Youth Choir, which was also taken over by Margret Birkenfeld, to a much more youthful choral sound and, as Schulte & Gerth studio choir, became one of the most important figures in the late youth choir movement .

Under the title Review 6: Margret Birkenfeld and the Wetzlar Studio Choir , Gerth Medien dedicated the sixth episode of its nostalgia series to his old studio choir in 2003. The composition was selected by the choir director herself.
