Simon Sten (also: Stenius, Stein, Achillis Clabigeri, Johannes Balaei, Simon Lithi ; * around 1540 in Lommatzsch ; † December 31, 1619 in Heidelberg ) was a German pedagogue, philologist, historian and literary scholar.

Life

Sten attended the St. Afra high school in Meißen and began studying at the University of Leipzig in the summer semester of 1557 on a vacant site in his hometown . There he acquired the academic degree of a baccalaureus in the summer semester of 1559 and on January 28, 1563 was master of philosophy. He continued his studies in 1564 at the University of Wittenberg , where he also gave lectures.

1569 became the founding rector of the grammar school in Bautzen , where he was dismissed on suspicion of cryptocalvinism . Therefore, in 1576 he moved to the grammar school in Torgau , where he was also involved in the theological disputes and therefore accepted a rector's position at the grammar school in Neubrandenburg . But here, too, the Gnesiolutherans did not let him work, so that in 1579 he accepted a position as rector of the grammar school in Neustadt an der Weinstrasse .

After the grammar school there was closed on March 22, 1585, he went to the University of Heidelberg on June 8, 1585 , where he became professor of ethics. At the same time he worked as an associate professor for Greek language and history and in 1596 took over the professorship for rhetoric and poetics.

Sten also took part in organizational tasks at the Heidelberg University. In 1587, 1593, 1599, 1604, 1609 he was dean of the philosophical faculty and in 1589 and 1597 rector of the academy.
