John Wermer

John Wermer (born April 4, 1927 in Vienna ) is an American mathematician who deals with analysis.

Life

Wermer received his doctorate in 1951 under George Mackey at Harvard University (On the Harmonic Analysis of Certain Groups and Semi-Groups of Operators). He is a professor emeritus at Brown University .

In 1956/57 and 1967/68 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study .

He deals with harmonic analysis, several complex variables, operator and function algebras, and approximation theory. He worked with Lars Hörmander , among others .

In 1962 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm (Maximal ideal spaces). In the same year he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1963/64 he was a Sloan Research Fellow . In 1973 he became a foreign member of the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala . In 1962 he became a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .
