John West, 2nd Earl De La Warr

John West, 2nd Earl De La Warr ( May 9, 1729 - November 22, 1777 in London ) was a British nobleman , politician and general.

Origin and family

He was the son of John West, 7th Baron De La Warr from his first marriage to Charlotte MacCarthy.

On August 8, 1756, he married Mary Wynyard. He had four children with her:

Career

He embarked on an officer career in the British military in 1746 at the latest and rose from the rank of lieutenant-general by 1770 .

In 1761, the hereditary titles Earl De La Warr and Viscount Cantelupe were created for his father . West apparently used the courtesy title Viscount Cantelupe as his marriage from now on .

When his father died on March 16, 1766, he inherited his title of nobility, as well as the associated seat in the House of Lords .

At the British royal court he entered the service of Queen Charlotte . From 1761 to 1766 he was her vice chamberlain , 1766 to 1768 as his father's successor her master of the horse and 1768 to 1777 her chamberlain ( Lord Chamberlain ).

He died in London on November 22, 1777 and was buried 8 days later in St Margaret's Church in Westminster . His eldest son inherited his title of nobility.
