John de Bonvillars

John de Bonvillars (also Bevillard ) († August 1287 at Dryslwyn Castle ) was a Savoy knight and official in the service of the English King Edward I.

John de Bonvillars came from Bonvillars , a village in Vaud, then part of the county of Savoy . He married Agnes , a daughter of the neighboring nobleman Pierre de Grandson . Bonvillars was one of the knights who came to England around the middle of the 13th century in the entourage of Count Peter II of Savoy , an uncle of the English Queen Eleanor , and entered the service of the English kings there as a household knight . His brother Henry de Bonvillars († 1320) also came to England and in 1285 was prior of Bermondsey Abbey .

After the conquest of Wales by Edward I , Bonvillars was ordered to Wales in 1283 to oversee the construction of the king's new castles . In 1284 Bonvillar's brother-in-law, Otton de Grandson , a close confidante of the king, was appointed justiciar of North Wales. However, since Grandson was often abroad on behalf of the king, he appointed Bonvillars as his personal representative. Bonvillars became commandant of Harlech Castle on October 3, 1285 . In 1286 he supervised the construction of Conwy Castle with the builder James of St. George . When the Welsh nobleman Rhys ap Maredudd rebelled against English rule in 1287, Bonvillars belonged to the army that besieged Dryslwyn Castle , the headquarters of Rhys , from August 15 . When he inspected a mine tunnel together with William de Munchensi and other knights , it collapsed prematurely, killing both knights, among other things. Bonvillar's widow Agnes remained the manager of Harlech Castle until 1290.
