John de Cobham, 2nd Baron Cobham († January 25, 1355 ) was an English nobleman and politician who lived in the 14th century.

Origin and family

John de Cobham was the son of Henry de Cobham, 1st Baron Cobham and the Maud de Morville. He came from an Old English family in the county of Kent , who had long lived in Cobham and Cowling.

Life and career

John de Cobham was probably born in the late 13th century. Since his father held important offices at the English royal court, he was promoted to Knight Bachelor before 1325 . He then embarked on a political career and was elected Knight of the Shire for the county of Kent for the years 1326/27, 1330, 1332, 1335, 1335/36 and 1336/37 as a member of the English Parliament . In 1337 he was appointed constable of Rochester Castle for life, in addition to his father . In addition, he had held the military post of Admiral of the Fleet from the Thames westward since 1335 .

With the death of his father in 1339 he inherited his lands and the title of nobility 2. Baron Cobham As a baron between 1342 and 1355 he regularly took part in the meetings of the newly formed upper house of parliament. For his military service he was made Knight Banneret in 1354 and rewarded with an annual pension of 100 marks .

He married in 1314 Joan Beauchamp († after 1343), daughter of John Beauchamp, 1st Baron Beauchamp , after her death Agnes Stone, daughter of Richard Stone from Dartford in Kent. He died on January 25, 1355. From his first marriage he had a daughter, Joan Cobham, who married Sir Philip le Despenser (1313-1349), lord of Goxhill in Lincolnshire and grandson of Hugh le Despenser, 1st Earl of Winchester , and a son, John de Cobham , who succeeded him as 3rd Baron Cobham.
